I finished with honors from a good State University. I have a college degree in Interdisciplinary Arts that comes along with an honorarium from my division. For the last 15 years or so, I have worked professionally as an actor, writer and music performer.
For fifteen years I've never been asked more than twice about my college degree.
By the same token, college was fun and I cannot say that possessing a degree has been a hindrance of any kind. However one could ask the query, was it worth it?
College degrees do not value that much in the music business except if you are into classical music. Certainly not in the genre of rock, hip-hop and pop in any case. As a session musician enrolling yourself in a popular music school might be of great help. Nevertheless it's all going to come down to how well you play, and more frequently than not, who you know.
A college degree from a well-regarded theater school such as Julliard or A.C.T might be helpful in securing an agent. Nevertheless, you need to realize that the impression you make during your audition will usually come first then followed by your degree. Degrees can help keep you profitable when you are looking for a job as an actor. You can glance at it to reassure yourself, but it's all going to come down to what you do in the moment.
Even as a professional writer my college degree has been of little impact. I mean it's listed on the resume that I use to attain work. Back in the days, the girl who was my boss must has inquired about it. However, in writing what matters most is your overall performance and the individuals you know and this is the same with acting and music.
If I had it to carry out all over again will I get a college degree? Perhaps not. I once played in a film with an exceptionally talented youthful man, who was just 19 years old. He just finished high school and has made a decision to move to Los Angeles a few days after he acquired his high school diploma. He'd been working in advertisements before I met him and after the movie we did together he went on to book a starring role in a network sitcom. He is still there today after several seasons. Certainly, bypassing college was a right decision after all.
A college degree is a fantastic thing to achieve. In many career fields it proves to employers that you have the capability to start and finish something major. On the other hand, a college degree might keep you from landing huge roles during the most marketable years of your life, this is in fact true especially when it comes to the entertainment industry.
