Call centres are a significant source of employment in Britain, in fact they are a massive source of work across the whole world. A great number of businesses take on call centre staff to take phone calls on their behalf, whether it’s to promote their services or assist their customers, you’d struggle to discover a large business that didn’t have or subcontract a call centre. When looking for New careers, call centres are frequently scoffed at, a lot of people turn their nose up at such a role and in all fairness, a lot of them will have good reasons too. I’ve been employed in various call centres and probably experienced both ends of the stick, it’s of course not all horrible in these jobs and there are a number of possibilities of making New careers out of them.
The first thing to bear in mind when thinking about call centre jobs is for what reason you’re applying for them. If you’re hoping for Career ideas within the industry you need to be careful of where you apply, whereas if you’re just looking for short-term work, any place will usually do as you’re not going to stay long anyway. A lot of call centre jobs are awful to start with, if you’re only staying short-term, you won’t have time to get a feel for the work, so despite where you go, you’ll most likely detest it. However, if you are looking to try and progress within these Careers, then you’ve got some studying to do. Ideally you want to locate and talk to people who have worked in call centres, because a number of places are very badly managed and unless you fit in as the manager’s personal favourite, you almost certainly won’t ever get a promotion. Sadly I’ve seen it all in recent years and have even been on the receiving end of it, in one of my positions I was in excellent standing for receiving a supervisor position; that is of course until my manager went elsewhere and I was left with a new manager who had no interest in anyone but a close group of friends.
So yes, it’s important to do your homework before getting into something long-term within a call centre. Make sure the company is decent and treats its employees well. We then proceed onto looking into what it is you’d be supporting on the phones. Are you going to sell something? Or perhaps you are working on the technical help side of a product. Whatever it is, you can research how popular and successful it is and how reliable it is. There’s nothing worse than taking call after call, nonstop, everyday, because the product you support is so unreliable and the customers are never happy. These Careers could be easily cut short in such situations because you’ll wear yourself out. If you do discover a nice company to work for however, call centre work can actually become quite pleasant. It’s always nice to help a friendly customer and it makes it even more satisfying when you’re properly thanked. When it goes well in these situations, you can then surely look at the Career ideas available, normally starting off by progressing into a supervisor or manager position.
